ONYX, the band, the men. the legend.
I went to Cornerstone ‘09 a couple of weeks ago. My good friend Bobby and I spent 4 days watching some great bands and attending some pretty cool lectures. There were some great new bands that I thought are really good (Children 18:3 for instance). But the highlight for me was seeing some of the older guys get back together after a long, long time. These guys( they are my age!!!) really showed the younger guys what it’s about. The Crucified played a fantastic set. Playing stuff from waaaaay back in the day. Stavesacre ( which the lead singer of The Crucified formed after their break up in the 90’s) played ,as well as Living Sacrifice ( they have been back together for a little while) both had impressive shows. The “old farts” can still rock! And most important, they gave glory to Christ.
I say all this, not only to let everyone know just how cool I am, but to also say it made a bit nostalgic for the old days. I have decided to make an ONYX page here on brothersstudios.com. I had our old reels to reels converted to digital several years ago and, other that making copies for the guys and a few friends to laugh at, I have never posted them anywhere. I think that before ’09 is over, it would be appropriate that we do so.
See, if memory serves me (Please….insert old man joke here) , this is 20 year anniversary of our last recording. (20 freakin’ years!!!!) Can you believe it has been that long??
Hence, the ONYX web site. It will be up and running very, very soon so you can check out some photos, read some info and backstory, share a memory of your own, and, please, help yourselves to the songs, they will be available to listen to or to download.. The quality is bad, the songs are dated, but they are free, and fun.. We have a special email address just for the ONYX page: onyx@brothersstudios.com . Check back here for the link and address of the new site. The site is coming along. Although there are a few things to do yet. I am giving the link of what I have so far. http://www.onyx.brothersstudios.com
Cool!
Wait, I mean, Awesome!
No wait, RAD!!!
Can’t wait to see it.
Ok, Where do I begin? This Idea really ROCKS! I would be glad to send anything I have which really is not a lot. That being said. I am very proud to be the keyboard player (when we first started) and then the second singer of the band. It was something that sent me down a career path that I will never forget. I actually still performed up till about 2 years ago and maybe I can even send some of that music as well. This will be alot of fun and maybe bring us guys back together again even if just to talk about old times. ONYX ROCKS!!!!!!
It always amazed me how ONYX got together and started playing. After listening to Stryper(?)each picked an instrument and started listening and copying the sounds of their instrument….many hours were put in practicing. In the beginning it was pretty painful for all concerned. I remember thinking at one point “well, at least they start and stop at the same time”. hee!!hee!! As a former music teacher it amazed me that much of the time you didn’t even know what key you were in but just played “by ear” or fingers as the case may be.
I was very proud of you all and I know that I didn’t say it much because I was also an “old” Mom and the “new rock” sorta blew me away (and probably not in a good way). I came to appreciate your dedication and committment to Christian Rock which some would say is a contradiction in terms.
I remember the night of Fairborn High School’s Talent Show. I was worried about yall getting up in front of a non-Christian crowd and the reaction you would get. There was sort of a “battle of the bands” that night. I don’t remember the name of the band that played before yall but it was definitely one that honored satan and was enthusiastically received by the audience. Then it was Onyx’s turn….I was actually scared to death…holding my breath and everything and I wasn’t even on stage. But Daniel as spokeman (and actual student of the school) spoke of the band’s committment to serve God with their music and I knew then it would be ok. They started playing to a few boos and abuse from the audience but when the band struck up the music they won the audience over with their talent and charm…..I was very proud to say the least.
Thank you boys for using your “talents” for God and for your continued committment to His service.
I love you all,
Mom
Just checked out the Onyx site.
Very Cool.
Thanks mom..
We love you too mom and now I know why you cleaned out the garage and put us in there heehee sorry about the plaster being shaken off the walls in the house.
Ok. I remember our first gig together and we named our “Homemade” light board Smokie the light board. I am unsure why it never killed anyone and also unsure how the fire marshal was never called for that show too. it was so crowded. I made the lights out of empty industrial soup cans and mounted regular light fixtures in them and used those colored halogen spot light bulbs and man did the get hot. we used tables for the stage and covered it with sheets and then had sheets for back drops ( hot lights right by them.) We could have been like that Great White concert in NY. The show went great and we all had a blast.
